We've been talk around the record Work Less, Live More: The Way to Semi-Retirement and done a combining of running a bit (part-time) and savings, you make a very reduced amount of hourseach week. One of the primary questions (at least in my mind) is how you can earn enough money in early semi-retirement to really have the concept work. The bible gives some work options for early semi-retirees as follows:
1.
The filler job. This is the job you make on with the end of devising a small sum of steady money in a comfortable, usually casual environment. Examples: Counselor at a kid's camp; greeter for a pro sports organization.
2. The avocation. The crop you might do even if you didn't get paid for it. Examples: Becoming an associate minister at a church; substitute teaching at a local school.
3. Your previous job, but less of it. You downshift from your old job to a lighter, flexible schedule working for the like party or doing the same character of function you did previously with another employer or work arrangement.
4. Consulting or freelancing. Using your expertise and contacts to act as a freelance or consultant in small, project-based doses, either for your previous employer of for one or more new ones.
5. Dealer, agent, or broker. If you put together a deal, you get paid; otherwise, nothing. Example: real estate broker.
6. Angel investing. Making direct investments in small private companies, often working closely with the company's management to assist with introductions or other advice to take the company more successful.
7. Real estate. Investing in real estate.
8. Innkeeping. Owning and operating an inn or bed and breakfast.
9. Artist or creative worker. Examples: painting family portraits; teaching musical instruments; creating/designing jewelry.
10. Hobby turned business. Examples: scuba diver cleaning the seat of boats; car enthusiasts selling vintage car parts; coin collectors opening up a shop.
11. Teaching. Could be with a public school, college, or even tutoring.
Some of these are a load and are not useful for the bulk of people IMO. For instance, being a dealer/broker, becoming an angel investor, investing in real estate, innkeeping, and being a creative worker seem like stretches to me - and some seem counter-productive. You're supposed to be conserving funds in early semi-retirement, so exactly how/why are you release to get the money to be an angel investor or a substantial estate owner? These just don't look very likely.
Personally, my favorites would be developing an avocation, doing less of my old job (assuming I liked it), turning a hobby into a business, freelancing (writing), and teaching.
How near you? See any money making ideas here that could make for you? If so, maybe you could start running on them now to help keep your bottom-line - no demand to hold until retirement to earn some more money, right? ;-)
