HP TouchPad: Video Calling & Skype Video

The technology that is crammed into these tablets is nothing short of amazing. What was considered bleeding edge just a pair of days ago on the background is now being crammed into smaller and smaller devices.

Take video calling for example. It wasn`t too long ago that to address someone through your computer with a figure was faithful to voodoo in its complexity.

Now, it is a few taps and you are ready to go. Setup

Video calling in the TouchPad is currently handled entirely through Skype. I am certain that there will be other apps that will be usable in the future, but for now it is all Skype all the time. From our perspective, that ain`t a bad thing.

Getting setup is extremely easy. You just setup your Skype account as you would any other account and you are set to go. Your contact list will charge up with your contacts from Skype and a little indicator will assure you if a touch is furnished for video calling.

To claim all you take to do is click on the reach and you are off. For our tests I occupied in a conversation with one of my favorite people, WOR Senior Editor Roy Sutton. He was on his Mac at home and I was on the TouchPad.

We initially ran into some issues_beat our heads against the rampart a bit until we eventually got it all working. We learned later that there is a launch day patch coming out to fix the issue with the Mac version of Skype so you shouldn`t run into any of these headaches. Rockin` and Rollin`

Once you are up the experience really couldn`t be better. Assuming your wifi has good speed the figure is perfectly open and doesn`t go up unless you are doing super quick movements. I was really impressed with the film quality.

One thing we did observe was that Roy`s voice wasn`t always synced with his lips_this is fairly common on video calls, and patch a bit weird, it doesn`t interfere with the conversation. Also worth noting is that the app only works in portrait mode. This makes sense because the 1.3 mega-pixel camera is on the top. Now this doesn`t imply that you can`t run the tablet anywhere you want to once you are on the call. It simply means that the app won`t rotate and go round to come you.

The good quality was on par with any Skype call_mobile or not. In other words, you kinda sound like you are in a burrow or on speakerphone. Most probable that is because you are, but Roy was using his high end "Snow ball" podcasting microphone and it even sounded a bit mechanical. Again, this is fairly standard stuff.

It is too cool to observe that you can use Skype just for audio calls as well. No motivation to draw up to your phone at all_just call away. This isn`t anything out of the average for modern mobile devices, but I even thought it was darn cool. Wrapup

Overall, I enjoyed the know a lot. It is often easier to use than my desktop setup and it is likely a lot less prone to error. My wife almost always runs into an event when using Skype on the desktop. When it is "webcam" time at my family it is really vulgar to see things like: "can you see me?", "is my mic setup correctly?", "what about now?". The ease of the setup of Skype in the TouchPad will most likely alleviate most of these issues which is awesome.
