Common Complications from Diabetes

Common Complications from Diabetes

Writer:Amy Tomlinson on May 6 2011.

Diabetes, fully named diabetes mellitus, is a disease that produces high blood sugar levels, either by not allowing the torso to get enough insulin, or damaging the body`s ability to respond to it. This disease can be lived with, so long as certain areas of the sufferer`s life are kept under control.

These areas include the maintaining of blood sugar levels, regulating exercise appropriately and making sure blood pressure and cholesterol levels are kept down.

If these areas are dealt with effectively, the likeliness of diabetics suffering any complications is diminished. Diabetic ketoacidosis is one of these complications, and is actually a medical emergency, occurring when the usually periodic process of turning the liver into fat, is sustained, resulting in an inflated amount of ketone bodies in the bloodstream. This can cause lethargy, coma and finally death if it is not treated immediately. If it is responded to quickly, however, it is normally followed by a good recovery.

Another complication is a hyperglycemia hyperosmolar state which is brought on by very high blood glucose levels. This results in the drawing out of water via osmosis out of the cells of the body into the blood stream, which makes the kidneys reject glucose into the urine. If this is odd to go on long enough it can take the sufferer severely dehydrated, so medical attention is required now to put water back into the body.

Hypoglycemia can also happen in which the trunk has too little glucose in the blood. This can be caused by wrongly timed insulin, too often or badly timed exercise, or not enough food. The symptoms include sweating, feelings of dread, altered or deprivation of consciousness but it can be relatively easily treated with sugary drinks, food or if necessary intravenous dextrose is used in hospitals.

One trouble with diabetes is that it leaves the martyr with a weakened immune system. This way that they are often more probably to get things like respiratory diseases, or kidney failure. It`s clear that diabetes can go to some pretty terrible complications, but as farsighted as exercise, food and carbohydrate levels are maintained properly, the risks of about of these things can be abated.
