If a watered down version of the Cinderella tale fell in bed and had a whirlwind romance with Tommy Wiseaus The Room, Just Wright would be its malformed love child.
Queen Latifah stars in this romantic comedy ironically missing the necessary ingredients to know up to its already blas film genre.
Average, hard-working Jersey Girl Leslie Wright (you know, for the pun of it) is a sassy physical therapist who scarce so happens to be a hardcore New Jersey Nets fanatic. Ms. Wrights haphazard love life is maligned as naught but wrong, since shes too butch to look like a viable mate to love-seeking players shes acquainted with. Luckily for Leslie, shes a role in a motion picture, and later a random gas station meet-up withwait for itthe New Jersey Nets star player Scott McKnight, she gets a new take on her poorly written life. Instantly shes transported to a world of enigma and wonder, complete with a shower party at his upscale New York mansion (though no shoes are left fatefully behind).
At the substance of this badly missed lay-up of a picture is this: flawed logic. There is so often about Just Wright that makes the wrong number of sense, that for your convenience I have attempted to pare the missteps down to only five:
Top 5 Most Illogical, Failed Free Throw Shots
of Just Wright:
5Minor, nameless, side characters appear and vanish at will, with the interview left to see out who they are and why theyre dispensing advice to the leads.
4The schizophrenia: Early in the film, NBA star McKnight falls for Queen Latifahs God-sister and its a whirlwind romance. They quickly becomeengaged and she is both fresh and loving to him. As shortly as McKnight gets injured, shes out the door, suddenly a money hungry gold-digger. The better role is, she leaves before their wedding, goes from the penthouse to cover to her dive in Jersey, guaranteeing her no money. She, as good as the remainder of the cast, will flip-flop their character traits throughout the film.
3The New Jersey Nets apparently play in New York and their chief rivals areThe Orlando Magic.
2Just Wright features in its cast both Phylicia Rashad and Pam Greer. Who in their right mind would give a film featuring both of these icons and not take them do in a single scene together? The creators of Just Wright, thats who.
1So the film is some jazz and basketball. Obviously if youve ever seen a picture in the story of cinema you recognize that Queen Latifiah and Commons will be together in the end. Youll also be sure to acknowledge that the basketball team will overcome adversity and win the end. Never fear: Both typical story conclusions happen. But you never see it. The Nets win the playoffs and head to the NBA Finals. No name is made of the outcome. And the happy couple casually mention in the concluding aspect that they are now married, though not yet a wedding picture or montage are shown, let alone a quick wedding scene. Apparently being Wright also means being anti-climatic.
In the end, Just Wright seems like something Hollywood shoved into cinemas because it's NBA Finals season, and you're going to need to squeeze it right back.
